Q: Does being awkward cost you points in the speaking?

A: Being awkward DOES cost you potentially some marks indirectly! Because, it can lead to incoherence, lack of fluency and unnatural language.

*From the very first question, be fluent and answer in full sentences!

(You should not say, “I was expecting that you would ask me that…” – while this is true, it is awkward to express this, so I don’t recommend it.)

My given name is Jackson and my family name is McIsaac, please just call me Jack for short. (please just call me by my nickname JJ)

Where do you live?

I live in a two-bedroom, three-story townhome in the heart of Victoria, which is the capital city of the province of British Columbia. 

*Giving clear accurate details will be VERY important to get high band scores in your speaking. 

What is close to your home?

*Be sure to have ACCURTE answers. Otherwise, the examiner may feel that you do not clearly comprehend the questions and/or you are using memorized answers. 

Close to my home, within five minutes walking distance, I can get to a major supermarket, where I buy my groceries, also there is a library, and a park, where I like to take morning walks. In fact, I was there this morning for some fresh air. (close by = just a stone’s throw away)

PART 1 

Let’s talk about dogs and cats (answers – me, my, myself, I)

Do you own a dog or a cat?

Currently, I do not own either a cat or a dog, because I do not have enough time to take care of a pet with my business and small children. However, I used to have a small American cocker spanial named Jessica, she was awesome, and I plan to buy a dog in the coming years. 

(No, I don’t have pets) – will not get you a band 9 – *at the minimum you MUST explain your answer “…because I am allergic to cat and dog fur…”

Which do you like more, dogs or cats? (Why?)

I love both, but if I had to choose, I would go with dogs for two simple reasons, I owned dogs and not cats growing up, as I had just mentioned, and I’m a bit allergic to cat fur. Also, people do say that dogs have masters and cats have slaves. Meaning that dogs tend to reciprocate the love they receive more than cats. 

Where do you see dogs usually? How about cats?

I often see people walking their dogs on the street near my home, or in the park where I took my morning walk. Fortunately, there are virtually no stray dogs in Victoria but there are some alley cats that I come across every now and again when I’m out early in the morning. 

Why do you think dogs like chasing cats?

If you could train a dog to perform a trick, what would it be, and why?
