IELTS Task 2 Writing – Payment for ongoing job training

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Many jobs require ongoing training and research to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving world of information and technology. Some believe that it is the responsibility of businesses to pay for this education for their staff while others feel it is up to the individual to advance their job skills. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

A lot of occupations demand education and practice to keep on top in a quickly developing world of data and tech. Certain individuals ascertain that it is up to companies to fund the development of their employees while others argue that it is the responsibility of each worker to better themselves and be qualified in their field. Discuss both perspectives and provide your own position.

Keep on top = be competitive

Up to = the responsibility

Write at least 250 words. 

STEP 1 β€“ Visualize, see yourself working for a company in web development and you have to learn Photoshop, MS Word, PowerPoint 

STEP 2 β€“ Paraphrase the question – use your own words to rewrite the question.

Caveat – be cautious -> to include ALL of the important points in the question and do not change or add to the question.  

To get a greater (deeper) understanding of the question and to gather useful vocabulary. *This is not necessarily the start of your essay. 

STEP 3 = Identify the TOPIC of the question and the Controlling Idea(s)

*Always strive (work hard) to give statements [and not questions] to your questions regarding the topic, controlling ideas, and critical thinking. 

TOPIC (What is the subject of this essay?) = Payment for ongoing job training

CONTROLLING IDEA (What specifically in connection to the TOPIC are we talking about?)

It is up to the companies or the individuals to pay for job training. 

*It is important to think before you speak πŸ‘ͺ It’s even MORE important to think before you write! Since you do not have the chance to clarify and follow up with your audience. 

STEP 4 [during the exam, you do this in your head and you may take a few notes VS at home, you do this on paper or typed into your computer] – Think Critically πŸ‘ͺ to think about β€œwhat” β€œwhy” and β€œhow” for the TOPIC and CONTROLLING IDEA. 

What is payment for job education?

A: to spend money for training to gain specific skills needed to produce quality work.

Why do people or companies need to pay money for job training?

A: Because quality training and education for evolving job skills are expensive. (visualize getting training for English, Photoshop, graphic design)

How is this done?

A: A company pays 1000 dollars for an employee to go on a weekend workshop to learn Conflict Resolution at seminar sessions in Chicago. 

Why should the company be responsible for funding the development of job skills?

A: Because they will benefit from the added skills, they will make more money, they can grow, they can improve reputation and productivity.

Why should the individual be responsible for funding their skill development?

A: Because they will be able to earn more money and they become more employable. They can potentially use the skills in other domains of their life. Because they take the training more seriously when they pay from their own pockets. 

Why should the company NOT be responsible for paying for job training?

A: Because the individual may quit their work and go to another company, so it is a financial loss. They already pay for the employee to do their work well. 

Why should the individual NOT be responsible for paying for job training?

It may be too expensive for the employee. The skills may be very specific to the company and not benefit the individual personally. 

My opinion = I believe that the responsibility of payment for job training should depend on whether or not the skill is specific to the position in the company. *This allows me to write a band 9 essay.  

Introductory Paragraph (Hook + background + thesis)

(Hook) Billions of dollars are spent each year worldwide for ongoing job training. Either companies or individuals invest money to acquire new skills so that they can be competitive and productive. Some people feel the cost of training is up to businesses as they can profit more while others feel individuals ought to pay since they can earn more. I believe that the responsibility of payment for job training should depend on whether or not the skill is specific to the position in the company.

BODY 1 β€“ (Business have to pay for job specific training.)

(Topic sentence) Certainly, a lot of workshops are directed towards very specific skills for employees in niche careers, and this should be paid for by the employer as they stand to benefit the most. (Explanation) There are jobs in medicine, construction, and computers that require skills that may only be used at one place of employment, such as operating a proprietary piece of hardware. (Example) For instance, an x-ray technician may need to learn the way to operate a new x-ray machine that the hospital has recently procured; clearly, the hospital should be the one to foot the bill for this training as they can give better service and make more money afterward. (Connecting sentence) This is the case where I believe that the company should pay for ongoing career development.

BODY 2 β€“ (Individual should pay for generalized skills in the workforce)

However, there are many skills that can be applied to a wide range of jobs and this kind of education needs to be paid for by each individual. Again, there are skills in medicine, construction and computers that are industry standards and a worker need to use regardless of their place of employment. (Example – reuse the previous example for this context). The same x-ray technician may need to update their knowledge of anatomy in light of new research, in order to provide quality work, and this expense ought to rest with the individual as they can use it at any point in their career regardless of their employer. 

CONCLUSION 

In conclusion, whether the worker or the business pays for training should depend on the skills provided by the workshop. If the company benefits most then it should pay, but if it is the individual gains the most then they should pay. I believe that this is fair and leads to the most viable results in the end for the ongoing success of employees and employers.
